Stoneway Roofing Supply has been in operation since 1924. Contractors and homeowners throughout Western Washington have relied on them for superior roofing products and related building materials. Stoneway Roofing Supply offers roofing materials and accessories from a wide array of manufacturers from asphalt composition shingles and metal roofing to wood shakes and slate..

Their existing distribution facility in Tacoma, Washington needed ground to dock access. They wanted to add the ability for their heavy duty forklifts to access their yard space for loading and unloading roofing materials. They wanted to add a ramp to a 14’ dock grade doorway to create improved access and better utilize their yard space. Together with Stoneway Roofing Supply, Nation Ramps designed a two section, 30,000 lbs (GVW) ground to dock ramp with a custom 34 foot length that met all of their demands to win the contract. Once the contract was awarded the ramp needed to be designed, manufactured, delivered and installed to their Tacoma, Washington location.

The solution was a Nation Ramps heavy duty 14-foot wide, two section ground to dock ramp that incorporated added 34-foot length to create a reduced grade. Having worked with many construction supply and materials handling businesses, we understood the required deliverables.

Prior to beginning the manufacturing process, our engineering team produced drawings for discussion and approval. Once the management team and staff were satisfied and signed off on the design, we engineered, manufactured, delivered and installed the heavy duty ramp in their Tacoma, Washington location within an 8 week delivery window.

Van Houtte

Van Houtte Coffee has been a master of coffee for over 100 years. Albert-Louis Van Houtte, a French immigrant, opened his first grocery store in Montreal in 1919 and soon concentrated on his one true passion: coffee. Maison A.L. Van Houtte® quickly carved out a reputation for premium quality products. Yet as a bean lover, Albert-Louis is not satisfied. The European coffee taste he loved so much back home is impossible to find; which is why he decided to buy a roaster and start roasting his own coffee at the back of his shop. This marks the beginnings of the House Blend, which hasn’t changed since. Van Houtte Coffee is now Canada wide and it is hard to go a day without seeing one of their delivery trucks servicing every major centre across the country.

Their distribution centre in Calgary wanted to transform two warehouse doors into a dock level loading points for their delivery trucks. They had an existing concrete ground to dock ramp, but they wanted to add the ability to a second and third door. With need to support pedestrian traffic including staff performing loading duties as well as drivers exiting their vehicles. With pedestrian traffic they also needed safe ground to platform access with an area protected from the vehicles using the ramp and platform. With the extreme climate in Calgary they also needed a durable finish that would look good for many tough winter and summer seasons. Together with Van Houtte Coffee, Nation Ramps designed a unit that met all of their demands to win the contract. Once the contract was awarded the ramp needed to be designed, manufactured, delivered and installed.

The solution was two custom Nation Ramps ground to dock ramps, combined with a level platforms and stairways that included a protected walkway. Having worked with customers like Stanley Access Technology, FedEx, Walmart and Home Depot, we understood the required deliverables.

Prior to beginning the manufacturing process, our engineering team produced drawings for discussion and approval. Once Van Houtte management were satisfied and signed off on the design, we engineered, manufactured, delivered and installed the custom ramp, platform and stairway in their Calgary location within the required delivery timeframe.

Home Depot

Home Depot is the well known home improvement store that has locations in the US, Canada and Mexico. They are also in the seasonal flower and potted plant business. Their location in Kamloops, British Columbia, was utilizing a portion of their parking space for their nursery department and needing portable loading/unloading facilities.

The Home Depot in Kamloops had set up their garden center department in a corner of their existing parking lot. As part of that, they required a portable loading dock to receive product deliveries. They were looking at several ramp providers, but were limited once the strict Home Depot safety protocols were considered. Although mainly using a standard forklift for off-loading, they also had a significant amount of pedestrian traffic, with staff unloading some of the product by hand. They approached Nation Ramps with these requirements along with wanting the flexibility to start with rental with the option to purchase, if the ramp solution worked well.

Working together with Home Depot safety and logistics departments, Nation Ramps customized our standard PLD20K, 20,000 lbs (GVW) portable ramp with stand alone platform, to include 42” pedestrian handrails and side access ladder. The management teams at Home Depot were satisfied with both the safety features and the ability to meet their unloading needs in Kamloops. Sign-off drawings were produced to get final approval and receive a purchase order from Home Depot Canada. The design was quickly approved and production scheduled.

The solution was a standard Nation Ramps 26.5-foot long ramp combined with a 7.5-foot long platform. At 100” width this ramp offers 96” of usable deck width to allow for wall to wall access of most van trailers and containers. With full 41” to 60” height adjustment, this ramp model is able to access even those containers on high chassis. Having worked with many corporate and government clients we understood the deliverables and committed to supply a OSHA safe, practical and efficient solution.

Once The Home Depot management teams were satisfied and signed off on the design, we engineered, manufactured and delivered their custom portable loading dock to their Kamloops, BC location in time for their on-site testing and arriving trailer loads.

Floral Company Requires Ground to Dock Access

MGS Floral uses carts to move their flowers from and to delivery vehicles at their warehouse in Norwich. Their existing building only had dock level access, and this meant they were required to move all of their product by hand. They approached Nation Ramps for a solution that would allow them to use their existing push carts to move the flowers in and out of their building. The challenge was the requirement for a grade that allowed carts to be pushed with human power. They were also concerned with the small wheels having difficulty transitioning over the ramp and into their building. MGS Floral was on a tight budget and needed a solution that was affordable.

The ideal ramp was a used PLD18K-34×77-50A portable loading dock coming off rental in Montreal. This ramp featured a solid steel transition plate allowing for the small wheels of the carts to easily move on and off the ramp without getting stuck. The PLD18K also has a 7.5’ platform to ensure a level surface entering and exiting the warehouse. With a 26.5’ ramp the grade allowed for the easy pushing of flower filled carts in and out of their building without risk to safety of their staff. With the unit being located in Montreal, Nation Ramps was able to offer quick delivery. Once on site the one-piece unit was easily off-loaded and placed for immediate use. The only adjustments for installation were removal of the dock bumpers, and minor adjustment to accommodate for the un-level ground and dock height. The PLD18K is rated at 18,000 lbs capacity and can easily handle the requirements of MGS Floral. As their needs change the ramp can also accommodate a 5,000 lbs forklift or be re-purposed to be used as a standalone loading dock. Along with our over engineered steel structure design, our ramps include 12” safety rails, ensuring that their push carts and pedestrian traffic are safe at all times.
